Rugged Phone Cases

As ‘responsible’ smartphone owners, we’ve all had minor incidents involving spilled coffee or maybe even mud. While some phones may be waterproof, the safest bet is probably to house them in a waterproof casing – some of them also happen to be shockproof (great news for those who drop their phones often enough). Here are some options to toughen up your phone:

8 - Hitcase Pro_Hitcase_ss

Hitcase PRO
The Hitcase PRO is not only waterproof and shockproof, it is actually made for those who want to make adventurous outdoor movies, thanks to its compatibility with a range of TrueLUX lenses (flat, wide, super wide and macro) and mounts (tripod, extension pole). Its ShockWave audio seal actually enhances audio quality. The solid casing is waterproof to 10m and shockproof up to 2m, with a very thin TrueTouch screen protector and an easy-to-open hinge mechanism. Designed for iPhone 6/6s with a variety of mounts and lenses optional.

Optrix Pro
Another waterproof case that turns your iPhone 6 into an adventure camera, Optrix’s thin shell clamps easily and securely to your phone to provide waterproofing up to 10m and shockproofing up to 6m. It comes with 2-4 types of lenses ranging from normal to wide-angle, as well as various mounts so you can attach them to anything from bikes to cars. The clear case is made of tough poly-carbonate which is vastly stronger than plastic “clam-shell” style cases. Available for iPhone 5 and 6/6s only, with a wide selection of lenses and mounts optional.

LifeProof Nüüd
Another popular brand is LifeProof, which has the Nüüd range that is snowproof, waterproof, dirtproof, and shockproof. Contrary to many protective cases, this range does not have a built-in screen protector, leaving the glass of your phone uncovered and easy to use. This does not affect its waterproofing (you can immerse it for 6.6 feet for an hour) or shockproofing (tested to military standard), however, it does leave your glass screen vulnerable to scratches. Built for Apple, Samsung and Motorola phones, and has a variety of clips and mounts sold separately.

OtterBox Defender Series
One of the most popular brands out there, the Defender series is a serious casing designed to make your phone shockproof, waterproof, dustproof, and scratchproof. The impact-absorbing outer layer is coupled with a solid plastic shell and built-in screen protector for a 3-layer protection – however, assembling it and charging it can be a hassle since you need to contend with the rubber outer layer. Built for Apple and Samsung phones, and comes with a belt-clip holster.

The LifeBox is waterproof (fully submersible up to 2m up to 1 hour), and meets military ratings for being dirtproof (including snow and ice), and drops of up to 2m. The case’s screen film protection does affect the touch sensitivity of the screen, and the button covers are pretty stiff. The case has cutouts for all your phone’s ports, and allows access to speakers, headphones and cameras. It’s one of the toughest cases for its price out there, but it’s only built for iPhone 6.

While not a phone casing per se, pOcpac is designed to fit the majority of cycling jersey pockets and is made to be weatherproof (sun, rain, snow) and muc proof (mud & sweat) while out on a cycle and is not shockproof. While it looks like a zip-loc bag (it has an easy-grip zip), it has a smart window that allows the use of your camera, plus the robust material makes it easier to operate the screen on your phone. Available in 3 sizes and customisable, it also stores other essentials like your keycard or cash.

From the manufacturer of drybags comes the waterproof phone case. Overboard’s cases are waterproof for up to 6m for 60 minutes, so you can go for a swim with your phone thanks to its 100% waterproof Slide Seal System. The transparent front and back allows you to browse and use your phone (except underwater) and it floats in the water if sealed properly. It’s compatible with most smartphones including iPhones, Blackberry phones and HTCs and has a range of mounts available.
